PATRRAI’s Inaugural Board Meeting Holds, Signals Clear Strategic Focus for 2026

The Patients’ Rights Advocacy Initiative (PATRRAI) held its inaugural Board of Trustees Meeting on Monday, 8th December, 2025, at the Golden Tulip Essential Hotel. The meeting, which was convened by the Chairman of the Board, Rt. Hon. Barr. Kennedy Ibeh, marked a significant milestone in the formal take-off of the organization.

In attendance were members of the Board of Trustees: His Worship, Dr. (Mrs.) Tobechi Agummadu and Dr. Kelechi Onyegbule, who serves as Secretary. The Board also received the regrets of His Lordship, The Rt. Revd. Godson U. Ukanwa, Ph.D, who was unavoidably absent.

Plans are underway for a public hearing on the bill, which will bring together a wide range of stakeholders, including representatives of the Nigerian Medical Association, hospital administrators, patient rights advocates, civil society groups, legal experts, and members of the public. The hearing, according to Ibeh, is designed to provide a platform for robust dialogue and to ensure that the legislation balances the rights of vulnerable patients with the legitimate financial concerns of healthcare providers. Several distinguished stakeholders were present, including Hon. Engr. Uche Agabige, Hon. Barr. Chisom Ted Ojukwu, Chief Emeka Israel, and Mrs. Chioma Emeka-Nwosu.

In his opening remarks, the Chairman reaffirmed the vision and mission of PATRRAI, emphasizing that the organization is committed to championing the rights, dignity, and welfare of patients across all healthcare settings. He stressed that the issues of medical detention, medical negligence, and patient vulnerability are global concerns and require coordinated advocacy and strategic intervention.

During deliberations, the Board unanimously resolved to expand its Trusteeship to include Hon. Engr. Uche Agabige and Hon. Barr. Chisom Ted Ojukwu, both of whom have demonstrated exceptional passion for patient-centered advocacy and possess distinguished records of public service.

The Board further resolved that the official launch of PATRRAI and the unveiling of its operational office complex will take place in the first quarter of 2026. Preparations toward this are already underway.

To ensure a strong operational foundation, the Chairman announced a personal commitment of ₦1,000,000.00 (One Million Naira) to support preliminary administrative and logistical needs. Other members and supporters are encouraged to make voluntary contributions in support of the organization’s early activities.

The meeting resolved to engage additional advocates, volunteers and legal experts in health law and human rights.

The meeting concluded with a renewed commitment by all participants to advance the cause of patient rights, promote accountability in healthcare delivery, and contribute to the creation of safe, humane, and patient-friendly clinical environments.

PATRRAI remains dedicated to its mandate and will continue to work collaboratively with stakeholders across medical, legal, governmental, and civil society spheres to address systemic challenges affecting patient welfare.
